African language productions take centre-stage in SATMag nominations

The Market Theatre’s bold commitment to develop and present productions  in all of South Africa’s official languages has been recognised in the inaugural South African Theatre Magazine (SATMag) Awards. The  Sesotho production, Mosali Eo U ’Neileng Eena, has been shortlisted in four different categories: Best Play of 2016; Best Choreographer for Sonia Radebe; Best Emerging Director for Selloane Mokuku; and Best Lighting Design for Nomvula Molepo.

The online SATMag Awards were launched earlier this year to invite the public to nominate and vote for the best shows and artists that were presented on South African stages between December 2015 and November 2016.

Hundreds of nominations were received, and the four nominees with the most votes in each category were shortlisted as the Final Nominees. The full list of nominees is available in the December 2016 edition of the SATMag. The winners will be announced in the January 2017 edition.

“The Market Theatre continues to play a vital role to support artists whose voices  deserve to be heard. Thought-provoking and provocative works in all of South Africa’s offical languages will always be mainstreamed at the Market Theatre”, said Zama Buthelezi, the Market theatre’s Branding & Communications Manager.

The Market Theatre is funded by the Department of Arts and Culture. The Award nominations announced during the Department’s Reconciliation Month celebration gives value to the Department’s commitment  to fund initiatives that advance social cohesion by preserving and promoting the cultural heritages of different communities  and promoting a sense of cultural pride by letting people watch productions in their own languages.

“The Market Theatre’s bold move to present work in different South African languages is also showing dividends at the box office in how new audiences are becoming regular subscribers. The Market Theatre thanks SATMag’s online readers for this enormous vote of confidence”, said Zama Buthelezi.
