It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our new Internet website. I hope you will find that the new features and information will give you a much better understanding of our history, our present – and our future.
Since its birth in that momentous year of 1976, the Market Theatre has become a crucial fixture in Johannesburg’s cultural and artistic life and – indeed – throughout South Africa and around the world.
Many of the dramas that became emblematic of the struggle against apartheid first found a dramatic life on the stages of the Market Theatre. In the same way, many of the country’s most beloved actors and musicians first found their footing and some of their earliest live performance opportunities on the Market Theatre’s stages as well.
In current work like “Songs of Migration” we continue to offer some of the most exciting, exuberant live theatre audiences can see anywhere in the world, but at prices only a fraction of what it would cost to see the same works in places like London or New York City.
I urge you to take advantage of this website to explore the many things the Market Theatre Foundation has to offer – live drama, of course, but also hands-on drama training at the Market Theatre Laboratory and highly regarded photographic instruction at the Market Photo Workshop as well.
On behalf of all of us at the Market Theatre Foundation, I look forward to seeing you here in the days and months ahead – the Market Theatre is a genuine South African experience that you can enjoy with friends and family. We know you will agree!
