Gallery 1989: The Market Photo Workshop was founded by David Goldblatt in1989. In this time South Africa was governed under a state of emergency. The cracks that would eventually lift the Apartheid regime from power into transition was already clearly visible: resistance, social unrest. These changes were echoed in the rest of the world. In China, student-led non-violent protests led to the Tiananmen Square massacre, marked by the Tank Manpic that became another iconic image of freedom. The announcement of the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 changed the world order. Photography’s role in the recording of history and tool towards democracy is celebrated with the founding of the Market Photo Workshop.
