Dehumanising campus video inspires 2016 Zwakala Festival Play
his year marks 25 years of the Zwakala festival, one of the most dynamic and ground breaking festivals aimed at uplifting Community based theatre makers. Isithunzi the winning production in 2016 gets a season on the prestigious Market Theatre stages. This new work by upcoming playwright Sipho Zakwe and director Luthando Mngomezulu showcases the Department of Arts & Culture’s Incubator programmer’s commitment to unearth talent and provide a platform for artists to hone their skills.
During 2007, a video about four white male students displaying despicable behavior towards a group of black middle aged cleaning staff went viral. The students were dubbed by the media
‘the Reits four’ the story grabbed national headlines and caused an outrage. Isithunzi gets into depth of this disgraceful and humiliating incident in a family when two boys, UScelo and uMuzi, sons of one of the women humiliated in the video attempts to come to grips with the impact of the incident on their family’s reputation and stability.
Isithunzi, loosely translated as “shadow” in its singular form explores themes of dignity, respect and reconciliation. The play offers a fascinating window into the world of the two brothers who are forced to grapple with themes of reconciliation, integration and the grey area in between.
This dynamic production will create conversations about an uncomfortable subject in South Africa. Isithunzi will challenge social norms and race relations in South Africa.
