A pioneering performance that
will ignite your musical soul
here is no need for ballet and jazz aficionados to watch their favourite art form in two separate theatres. The ground-breaking artistic collaboration, When Ballet Meets Jazz will bring together a group of young classical and contemporary dancers from CuDanSA and Carstens Ireland Ballet Studio, and a formidable sextet of amazing Jazz musicians. Unfamiliar with each other’s’ worlds, these young and talented artists will take their audience through a touching discovery of a diverse cultural heritage where dance and music become one.
This unique and brand-new concept that will be launched at the Market Theatre will bring together Dirk Badenhorst, CEO of the South African International Ballet Competition and the newly formed CuDanSA in a collaboration with the renowned academic and musical leader/director Andre Petersen and Jazz executive producer Aymeric Péguillan.
Their shared artistic vision has given birth to an original production that will present a memorable journey into artistic creativity, exploring the SA and International Jazz standard repertoires in harmony with freshly crafted modern choreographies combined with a few more classical pieces.
“ The Market Theatre believes in pushing the envelope”, said James Ngcobo, Artistic Director of the Market Theatre Foundation as he expressed excitement about this collaboration. “We are excited to bring this explosive production of Jazz and ballet and look forward to our audiences enjoying this master piece.”
The musical collection will include compositions by Abdullah Ibrahim, Bheki Mseleku, Alan Silinga, Andre Petersen, Pablo Lapidusas, Leo Espinosa and Michael Buble. The works presented include, among others, some beautiful neo classical and contemporary choreography to amazing jazz standards as well as ballet highlights like the Cygnets from Swan Lake, and the ever popular The Dying Swan.
The choreographies are by Douglas Sekete, John Motebejane Tsunke, Natasha Ireland and Dirk Badenhorst. The female dancers are from the Carstens Ireland Ballet Studio: Tannah Levick, Veronica Louw, Michaela Louw, Gemma French and Nehanda Péguillan, and the male dancers are from the newly formed CuDanSA: Thami Njoko, John Motebejane Tsunke and well-known Cuban virtuosity dancer Javier Monier Jouve.
The Musical Director is the brilliant music academic and pianist Andre Petersen. The band members are Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2016 Siya Makuzeni (Voice/Trombone), alto saxophonist and flutist Mthunzi Mvubu, double bassist Neville Nhlanhla Radebe, trumpeter Lwanda Gogwana and the very energetic Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums.
When Ballet meets Jazz is a unique music and dance collaboration that will make you discover the rich heritage of South Africa Jazz and how its unique voice marries exquisitely with dance.
