As part of my almost daily internet trawling, I make a point of seeing what is happening in theatres in America.
Not just on or off Broadway, but in regional theatres too. There I find reviews about plays old and new and knowing that we in South Africa are not likely to see them in our own theatres, I sigh, and not without a little envy, click a new tab and move on. Not for a minute am I suggesting that South African Theatre is not up to the same standards. I don’t suffer from local is lesser perceptions, but the American contemporary theatre scene is somehow more proactive in it’s approach to supporting itself. I don’t want to get into a debate about the local zeitgeist but seeing Tarrel Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size made me see just how, and why the hype around this play is completely justified
