Multitalented Siyabonga branches out
Zintle Makeng
SOME viewers may know him best for his role as Cassius in the SABC1 drama series, A Place Called Home. Others may know him as Rhythm Citys kwaito star and good kid gone wrong, Boboza. but how many of you knew that Siyabonga Radebe is also a comedian? Before you get ideas. Radebe is not planning a one-man stand-up comedy show. The local actor is. however, getting ready for a one-man comedy show called Smiles and Cries at the Market Theatre this month. It is said that comedy is where this creative minds passion really lies and that thanks to his various acting roles its a passion and talent thats finally taking flight. Smiles and Cries is about the trials and tribulations of a young township boy from KwaZulu-Natal and his journey to the bright lights of stardom in the City of Gold - the highs and the lows, the pain and the joy as well as the smiles and the cries that have moulded him to be the person he is today. The show is set to cover everything from family dynamics, culture, race issues, relationships, peer pressure, violence, discrimination, tradition and religion in a comedic story about the quest to achieve the South African dream. With a great motivational undertone to it, this show will not only seek to entertain but it will also look to inspire the audience, evoke laughter and tears and, of course, smiles and cries. The inclusion of a live band will serve to add another dimension to the narrative of the story and without giving too much away, audiences are definitely in for a treat. Other shows in which the actor has featured include the SABC1 hit drama. Intersections, and the Hollywood blockbuster, District 9. Not just limited to television, Radebe is an experienced theatre performer and singer with an album in the pipeline. Smiles and Cries is on at the Barney Simon at the Market Theatre from November 24 - December 4.
