Review - William Kentridge’s refuse the Hour

Theres a William Kentridge celebration starting on September 6 at the Market Theatre and culminating almost 10 days later with a Kentridge collaboration deluxe. It will allow the Gauteng public to see a work in preparation for Refusal of 7ime which will be part of Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany, next year, informed by discussion with the science historian Peter Galison. Its a celebration of collaboration, said Kentridge at a launch of the event at his Arts on Main studio where the workshop and rehearsals of Dancing with Dada followed these past few weeks. Refuse the How; as the celebration is titled, is a twoweek programme at the Market (sponsored by The Market in association with The Goodman Gallery and the French Institute), and brings together several live events with collaborators such as Philip Miller, Francois Sarhan, Dada Masilo, Sue Pam-Grant and Catherine Meyburgh making a short festival of performances. Most of the programme consists of works that have been performed around the world, but never properly in Joburg. What they are especially hoping for with the Refusal of 7ime is that it will be the forerunner to what fmally emerges and is performed on a larger scale than here. But, says Kentricige, it still means South Africans will be in on the process. When he elaborates on that process he describes it as a coming together of someone who can move fantastically (Masilo), working with someone who cant move at all (Kentridge). He is also collaborating with his favoured musician, Miller, who will be using different instruments, singers and sounds to create the music (see story inside). Time is the concept, but also at issue when working on these kinds of productions. While witnessing a workshop session which reflects what you would imagine a film set is like - with seamstresses sewing and ironing costumes on the side, others polishing the magnificent Kentriclge machines - time becomes something completely different. We all have to come together with time and our relationships, explains Kentridge and thats where the performances and the music will emerge. Its a bit like putting all the peices in a hat and throwing it on stage. How does something disintegrate into chaos and what do we make of it? That chaos is what this eclectic and multi-talented group is exploring. It is about finding good collaborators, finding a team that works and then what ensues is panic to the end. But then, says the genius creator, if the process works, we will have a small jewel, and that will lay the foundation for the final work, which we will probably only see on film rather than live. Thats why this present work is such an exciting event. A.V.E.: R17234.70 Pub Date: 30 Aug 2011
