Antjie in Berlin takes the audience on an aural journey based on recordings of Antjie Krog reading a number of letters written during a residency in Berlin and included in her recent book “Begging to be Black”. The speech melodies, tempi and rhythms of Antjie’s distinctive readings are transformed into piano music, unfolded and commented upon within a sound environment based on field recordings made in Berlin and made audible via a landscape of loudspeakers structured according to the layout of the city.
The evening kicks off with Without Time and Place in which Jill Richards improvises to intricate abstract drawings created by artist Marcus Neustetter on the spot. Extremely close details of the drawings are made visible through live video projections, opening up a world not normally perceived in the everyday medium of pen and paper. The piano improvisations provide further points of inspiration for Neustetter’s calligraphic adventures which in turn fuel the music and so on. A back and forth between the visual and aural domains.
Antjie in Berlin had its premiere at the National Arts Festival in 2012 in Grahamstown.
