BUSINESS UNIT: MARKET PHOTO WORKSHOP
COORDINATOR: ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH
The incumbent will co-ordinate the development of archive and research programming for the Market Photo Workshop. This position supports the public programming and administrative capacities of projects and courses, exhibitions, research and the Photo Workshop library.
Key Job Responsibilities:
■ Develop and implement project plans for the activities of archives and research ■ Support projects staff and interns ■ Account for optimal use of finances, equipment, infrastructure and human resources within assigned projects and media ■ Assist and participate in fundraising activities of the Photo Workshop in relation to archive and research programming. ■Align archives and research with agreed criteria of funders and the needs of the MPW ■ Deal with administrative matters around archives and research that includes producing strong archives and research reports; planning and reporting on archives and research budgets ■ Co-ordinate the process of the quality assessment of archives and research, which includes the management of physical archival storage ■ Manage the staff development of self and project staff ■ Reflect on and review archives and research with Photo Workshop staff and the Library Committee when needed ■ Co-ordinate the loan, licensing, and reproduction of archival materials that includes a physical and digital collection and their condition reporting ■ Develop a database of archives and research agencies and initiatives for the purposes of skills transfer, public-private partnerships that can raise the profile of this cultural resource in terms of appreciation and understanding ■ Supporting the development of an archival management system for the Photo Workshop ■ Co-ordination of archival and research programming for the Photo Workshop ■ Production of updated reports on research and archive ■ Management of physical and digital storage facilities.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
■ Tertiary qualification in Humanities (qualification in Photography, visual and heritage archives will be advantageous)
■ Minimum 2 years’ archiving, arts and heritage management, media archive related experience
■ Excellent writing, information gathering skills and experience with diverse research methods
■ Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills to liaise with both internal and external stakeholders
■ Be able to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative
■ Show a critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners
■ Understanding of the national legislative framework for the use of archives, photography, and copyright law
■ Develop and maintain sound relationships
■ Be highly computer literate, which would include knowledge about archival management systems and photographic post-production
■ Work across a diverse workforce and manage cultural barriers
■ Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
■ Ability to communicate more than one South African official languages.
