Tshiamo Mokgadi – CEO
Has an MBA from Henley Business School as well as an Honours Degree in Dramatic Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand. She was the Production Manager for the South African State Theatre, previous Arts Manager of the Playhouse Company and former Producer for the Market Theatre Foundation for 10 years. As Arts Manager, she was responsible for designing artistic programmes and pre-selecting possible productions for inclusion in the annual production plan. In addition in both positions; all budgets, finances and contracts for the Artistic divisions were her responsibility. She was tasked with the overall strategic planning of the divisions as well as conceptualising, planning and implementing skills development plans and the advancement of training interventions for would-be theatre practitioners and their groups for either the AD and/or CEO’s input or approval.
The three previous positions highlighted above have seen her working in different administrative and technical roles in the arts creation process – giving her an appreciation and understanding of what it takes to successfully create art and run a publicly funded performing arts centre – experience few could speak of.
Christine McDonald – CFO
Christine McDonald has been the Chief Executive Officer for the Market Theatre Foundation since 2003. She joined the foundation as a consultant brought in by the Department of Arts and Culture to implement a turnaround strategy and to implement change from the foundation’s disarray financial state to a financially stable institution. In addition to her financial portfolio she has successfully managed building projects for the foundation worth more than R150 million. Since her arrival the Market Theatre Foundation has enjoyed clean financial audits.
James Ngcobo – Artistic Director
James became the first black artistic director to take over the most prestigious creative side of the Market Theatre, and he continues to enhance its worldwide reputation for artistic greatness. James, a veteran award-winning actor who metamorphosed into a multi award-winning director, has created a new vision for staging works at the theatre. His passion for working with undiscovered actors, young designers and for mentoring young industry enthusiasts has yielded great results by grooming young artists to tell new South African stories. 2017 is his fourth year as the Artistic Director of the Market Theatre Foundation.
