Manager: Research and Exhibitions Programming




To develop , manage and consolidate research , exhibition projects and public programming of the Market Photo Workshop(MPW) , as interface between Market Photo Workshop students , alumni and the wider photography community and cultural sector. This includes conceptualising and producing exhibitions, engagement projects , offsite exhibitions and presentation of the Market Photo Workshop work at festivals. The position requires a strong competency in project management and the leveraging of visual knowledge resources of the Market Photo Workshop through archives-related holdings and projects, developing research and knowledge-production focused publications that engage students and the photography community.

 Key Job Responsibilities:

 Exhibitions development and programming:

 Developing an annual exhibition programme of mentorships, Alumni and students at the Market Photo Workshop Gallery as well as Market Square and Market Theatre galleries (Photographers’ Gallery) ■ Conceptualising, developing and managing offsite or travelling exhibitions ■ Leveraging gallery facilities for non-exhibition public programming such as : Residencies ■ Gallery management and maintenance ■ Develop a students’ engagement programme with Market Photo Workshop exhibitions and galleries ■ Oversee and contribute to critique sessions and workshops relating to final exhibitions  ■ Managing and overseeing curation of exhibitions and installations ■  Develop and manage Market Photo Workshop engagements and participations in both regional and international exhibitions, festivals and projects.

 Research development and engagement programming:

 ■ Organise a series of symposia and public tasks ■ Publication development and production ■ Develop projects and exhibitions relating to Archives ■ Manage residencies and residency outcomes ■ Attend and represent the MPW in delegated seminars and other fora focused on the visual arts , photography and archives.

Fundraising and partnerships:

 ■ Develop new partnerships with organisation that share same values and objectives as the Market Photo Workshop ■ Contribute to the development of fundraising proposals for exhibitions , publications, archives and research projects ■ Maintain funder and stakeholders relationship.


■ Activate media and marketing for exhibitions and exhibition activities supported by the Market Theatre Foundation’s Branding and Communications Department ■ Activate media and marketing for research and archives-related projects in supported by MTF Branding and Communications Department.

Project Administration:

 ■ Develop and implement project plans including logistical design and time frames ■ Leverage media in consultation with MTF brand & communication manager to ensure publicity of both projects and courses across a variety of media platforms ■ Monitor , assess and manage projects progress ■ Identify ,manage , coordinate and support project staff ■  Ensure optimal use of finances ,equipment , infrastructure and HRs within research and exhibitions programming ■ Maintain projects budget expenditure and keep records of all expenses as per internal governance processes ■ Assist and participate in the fundraising strategy of the Photo Workshop , especially for projects ■ Align projects with agreed criteria of funders ■ Deal with administrative matters around projects ■ Produce project and media reports ■ plan and report on project budgets ■ Manage projects quality assessment process ■ Manage the staff development of self and project staff ■ reflect and review projects with Photo Workshop staff ■ Ensure regional , continental and international integration in programmes ■ Establish links with other like-minded organisations and the larger community- to partner, network and collaborate in appreciating and understanding photographic profile.

Key Competence Requirements:

■ Degree in Photography ,cultural management or visual arts and postgraduate qualification will be advantageous ■ Minimum 5 years experience in creative/cultural projects and visual Arts project management/leadership ■ Minimum 2 years of proven staff and resources management ■ Minimum 2 years proven research experience within Arts sector both Academic and non-Academic ■ Critical global awareness of nature and role of photography, visual culture and Arts with a specialised focus on South Africa and African continent ■ Excellent communication skills, both Verbal and Written ■ Excellent leadership and project management skills ■ Ability to work under pressure ■ Understanding corporate Governance principles and Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) ■ Proven record of handling multiple projects ■ Availability to travel at given times and willingness to work beyond normal hours ■ Must be flexible and willing to adapt to changing working environment ■ Well organized and pay attention to detail ■ Reliability ■ Passionate , driven and dynamic.
