Brothers – Social Media Assets

Brothers when the past comes back to haunt you!

Brothers is an award winning play by Victor Gordon that reflects the serious side of family tragedies that tear families apart and the fundamental human truths about families haunted by past occurrences.

Brothers will be directed Francois Jacobs who will be making his directing debut with this production.  Francois will be mentored by the award-winning actor and director, Mncedisi Shabangu, an alumnus of the Market Theatre Laboratory.  Francois Jacobs is no stranger to the Market Theatre stage. He starred in Athol Fugard’s critically acclaimed People Are Living There as well as Cincinnati: Scenes from the City Life originally created and workshopped by Barney Simon. Francois Jacobs  is also well known in the television industry starring in Donkerland and Sterlopers.

Brothers reflects the social strata and attitudes that exists within a poor white family who eked out a meagre existence in a harsh and desolate area of the Eastern Cape in the 1950’s.   The play reflects the tension derived from circumstances, provoked by the return of one of the brothers who had mysteriously disappeared for 18 years .  However his return unearths the secrets and frustrations that have remained hidden all these years, only to result in tragedy with their inevitable release. While the setting of the play is in the past, the familial issues and prejudices that motivated the writing of the play remain relevant to society today.

Brothers is made possible through the Market Theatre’s Incubation Programme grant from the Department of Sports, Arts & Culture.   Through the grant Francois Jacobs will not only acquire new skills through his directing mentorship but he will also have the opportunity to work with a talented cast which comprises Dawid Minnaar, Drikus Volschenk, David James, Gustav Gerderner and Ruan Wessels which will help with this challenging script.

Brothers will also offer the opportunity of professional mentorship to 4 young incubatee theatre designers – Gift Makadikwa (Set Design), Neliswa Fantesi (Lighting Design),  Philani Masedi (Costume Design) and Lebogang Rammala (Sound Design) as well as Froas Masseule (Production Management) and Philadephia Williams (Stage Management).  Being mentored in an award winning play and interacting with skilled theatre professionals and actors will be of enormous benefit to the incubatees.

Brothers will be staged at the Market Theatre from  Friday 24 January to Sunday 23 February 2020.

Theatre enthusiasts can also see Mncedisi Shabangu’s Vuka Machel at the Market Theatre Laboratory’s Ramolao Makhene Theatre from Wednesday 15 January till Sunday 2 February 2020.
