DOP mesmerizing tale of an ordinary man
DOP, Retief Scholtz’s theatrical debut will be presented at the Market Theatre for a two-week run from 9 -19 January 2020. Produced by Kosie Smit, directed by Sylvaine Strike featuring Andre Odendaal (acclaimed actor and director for more than thirty years) and Wilhelm van der Walt (Aardklop 2015 Best Actor award winner for “Son.Maan.Sterre.”).
DOP is a fascinating and cutting-edge story of Frank Venter, an ordinary man. One of thousands in life that a few will know, and even fewer will remember. Like everyone, Frank has a story that nobody listens to. It’s not impressive enough — or is it?
Frank sits in a bar. It’s his birthday. The only person around is Tim, the barman. Frank is alone in the bar — the same could be said about his life. Frank and Tim need something from one another. Frank needs a soundboard to confirm his existence, Tim needs the correct words to speak his heart’s truth.
According to Scholtz, he wrote the role of Frank specifically with Odendaal in mind.
Two strangers start to talk about life, generations, emigration, dreams (unfulfilled and new ones), the 1990 Boston Art Heist, rainforests, regret and how things so often are not as they appear to be.
In vino veritas. As die clock ticks on, masks are removed, secrets are revealed, talents from yesteryear are remembered and sentences start to become incoherent.
In senseless bar talk and conversations without a point, there is truth and emotion — without pretense. The story is beautifully narrated in Afrikaans and English. It’s an intimate production where audiences are given insight of a distraught man who through his excessive alcohol consumption at the bar opens about his uncertainty of embracing change lives in the past.
DOP is directed by award winning actress, director and theatremakers as well as Artistic Director and co-founder of Fortune Cookie Theatre Company, Sylvaine Strike.
