BUSINESS UNIT: STAGE AND TECHNICAL SERVICES
To assume overall responsibility for the Stage & Technical Services Department, management and oversight of the staff in the Department, administration and budget management for the Department according to the Market Theatre Foundation’s policies and any applicable regulations governing the rendering of stage & technical services at the Market Theatre Foundation. The incumbent’s operational responsibilities shall be centred around oversight of ensuring that all technical aspects of a show are carried out in a timely fashion, including scheduling the set design, sound, lighting and set construction as well as ensuring all technical details required by productions are implemented and for taking responsibility for any technical emergencies during performances. Ensure that the Market Theatre keeps up with technological innovation and advancements. The incumbent is overall responsible to ensure that the Market Theatre Foundation’s Technical & Stage Services Department complies with all aspects of Health & Safety and with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act in respect of managing staff in the Department.
Key Job Responsibilities:
■Strategically plan and coordinate all aspects of the Department’s smooth operations ■Plan, manage and have oversight of the Department’s budget, resources and inventories; and that any procurements for the Department comply with the Supply Chain Management policies ■Ensure that all the stages & technical work areas of the Market Theatre Foundation comply with Health & Safety regulations ■Have oversight of the Market Theatre Foundation’s stores, workshops and of the staff designated to the stores and workshops ■Coordinate responsibilities, talks and schedules of technical staff and manage the performance of the technical staff to ensure technical quality of productions ■Coordinate elements of productions, such as audio, special effects, and scene breakdowns, set building, lighting specifications to ensure production objectives are met ■Ensure that all production technical staff produce daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required ■Schedule use of studio and editing facilities for producers, production technical meetings, production performance schedules, and technical staff ■Ensure that all technical/production department staff are trained in the use of equipment, such as sound equipment, lights, and general production set up and recommend relevant external training aimed at developing the skills of both new and existing members of staff ■Monitor productions to ensure that specifications provided by the directors and producers are adhered to as well as mandatory health, safety and general labour conditions ■Provide technical advice to the MTF regarding the quality and skills levels of technical staff, recruitment, deployment and development ■Supervise and assign duties to production staff and liaise with directors as required in the pre- productions technical se ups and post -productions clean- ups and to be present at technical run- throughs ■Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of performance of staff directly under his/her supervision ■Assume overall responsibility for developing and implementing safety and security systems aimed at ensuring safety of theatre at all times ■Ensure availability and good working condition of all sound, lighting, and other stage equipment so as to ensure smooth running of productions and to organize preventive maintenance thereof ■Develop and implement systems to account for all equipment allocated to the department and to conduct stock taking of equipment at regular intervals ■Coordinate the budgeting process for the technical department including technical requirements for productions, estimates of preventive maintenance, new equipment and human resources requirements for the coming year ■Keep abreast of new developments within the technical theatre productions field so as to maintain standards set by the industry ■Compile financial reports pertaining to the use of allocated financial resources to the department at required time frames ■Monitor and report on use of recorded music in productions (normally performed by the producer’s office in other organizations) ■Arrange logistical aspects of incoming and outgoing tours of productions ■Act as technical director for majority of production ■Financial management, debtors/creditors, salary, contracting, debt collection, credit applications ■Manage Supply Chain Management and Asset Management for department ■Manage, mentor and develop human resources within the Production Department
Key Competence Requirements:
■Grade 12 (Matric) ■Relevant tertiary qualification – degree or diploma in stage services and or allied field in the Performing Arts ■Project Management qualification ■Minimum 10 years’ experience in a in the technical services department of a theatre or a stage services company ■Minimum 5 years of proven staff and resources management in the technical services department of a theatre or a stage services company ■Proven Project Management experience ■Extensive networking in related fields aligned to stage & technical services for the performing arts ■Solid management experience across cultural barriers, identify and develop talent within the technical & stage services department of a theatre ■Sound management of all conflict situations that occur in the theatre environment which could include the actors in the production, technical crew and stage managers ■Excellent oral and written communication skills ■Passionate, driven, dynamic and conflict management skills ■Manage financial and budgetary requirements and to compile financial reports as required within the Theatre disciplines ■Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment ■Excellent leadership and project management skills ■Understand and speak more than one South African official language.
