BUSINESS UNIT: MARKET THEATRE FOUNDATION
STORES AND GENERAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANT
The post offers potential for the incumbent to grow a career in the Technical & Stage Services Department and to work under the guidance of Head of Technical & Services and Production Administrator to develop the Market Theatre Foundation’s technical stores into a hiring service for the arts sector.
To provide effective and efficient support to the Technical and Stage Services department. Responsible for, over and above principal accountability:
- Set, props and costume storage and management
- Maintenance support for the Stores and workshop
- Rentals – of workshop and set, props and costume.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
■ Manage the Market Theatre Foundation’s theatre stores, workshop and render technical support services to the Market Theatre Foundation Stage & Technical Services Department ■ Coordinate workshop space ■ Implement Occupational Health & Safety regulations for the workshop ■ Workshop maintenance and upkeep and liaison with outside users of the workshop when it is hired out ■ Keep a tool and stock registry and implement improvement strategies to support the Production Manager ■ Prepare set, props and costume for in-house productions and external hirers as well as return all set, props and costume to their allocated stores ■ Stores maintenance and upkeep – Manage set, props and costume inventory for productions ■ Work in conjunction with Sound and Lighting staff to maintain and improve stores ■ Act as a prop master for productions and hirers ■ Assist in the cataloguing of set, props and costume ■ Serve as a Stage Manager for Events – including but not limited to the Windybrow Arts Centre, Market Photo Workshop, Market Theatre Laboratory and booking related events ■ A background in stage management with basic skills in stage lighting and sound is advantageous ■ Run sound or lighting cues or both when required ■ Render support to the rental division with regard to technical stage services.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
■ Minimum 2-3 years technical and stores (workshop) maintenance related experience
■ Grade 12 (Matric)
■ Qualifications in Theatre studies, theatre technology or a related performing arts field
■ Preference will be given to an incumbent with stage management and theatre workshop experience
■ Basic accounting skills
■ Computer skills
■ Communication skills, both verbal & written with ability to communicate more than one South African official languages.
