François Isak Smit reimagines how arts spaces function as ecospheres—infrastructure that outlives their physical heritage and resists the commodification of cultural encounter. After a decade leading postgraduate studies at a private education institution, he moved to Goethe-Institut Johannesburg as Project Team Manager for Africa–Europe Partnerships for Culture, where he insists on structural change within arts institutions by naming contradictions openly as organisational strengths.

He founded House of Shem NPC to return cultural events to their foundational purpose – gathering, meaning-making, collective reimagining – rather than serving institutional or commercial agendas. His approach across all contexts is that of a facilitator who brings relevant voices to motivate transformation, not as a claimant to transform institutions himself.

Currently pursuing an EdD focused on epistemologies of learning, he serves as Council Member of The Market Theatre Foundation.
