Through comedy, physical theatre and an expanded movement vocabulary, ASKIES / SORRY explores the push and pull of male-female relationships, exposing the tensions that often hide beneath everyday interactions. The work playfully examines domestic dynamics, communication breakdowns, emotional labour, gender expectations and the subtle ways power operates between people. While audiences are invited to laugh at the absurdity of the situations unfolding on stage, the work also raises questions about how relationships are shaped by social conditioning, vulnerability, care, conflict and, at times, abuse.
In this newly extended version, dance and physical storytelling become central to the performance, allowing the body to speak where language falls short. The result is a fast-paced theatrical experience that shifts seamlessly between comedy and commentary, revealing how a simple apology can become an act of affection, manipulation, avoidance, survival or resistance.
“The idea arrived almost instantaneously during our time at the Centre for the Less Good Idea,” say Majela and Mojela. “Teresa was the perfect collaborator to test it with because of her spontaneity and willingness to jump into the unknown. What started as a simple experiment around one word quickly became a hilarious journey for us, both on and off stage. Along the way, we discovered conversations about relationships, communication and the ways people navigate one another every day. We hope audiences can laugh at themselves while recognising something deeply familiar about the way we relate to one another.”
