About the Role
The Artistic Director is responsible for the artistic vision of the MTF. This position is an executive role and is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and focus of the Market Theatre including the selection, interpretation and overseeing of works. This position is accountable for leading the theatre to new levels of artistic excellence to continue and build upon the legacy of developing, producing, and presenting socially conscious, thought-provoking work that illuminate the experiences, and interests of a diverse population. This executive post is responsible for the design and implementation of the Theatre’s annual artistic programme and ensuring the quality of the Foundation’s artistic products.
- Articulate a clear and distinctive artistic vision, which provides the framework for the work presented on the Market Theatre’s stages.
- Plan, within available resources, a programme of productions including co-productions.
- Conceive, identify, programme and successfully stage, in terms of pre-agreed measurements, mission and vision of MTF, a minimum of 20 productions annually at the Market Theatre.
- Ensure that each production conforms to a quality standard that is to be determined and documented prior to implementation.
- Commission new work from writers where appropriate.
- Providing support for guest directors, working with them to ensure that there is continuing high standard in all the Foundation’s work.
- Working with writers to develop ideas for new scripts for the stage.
- Review and implement the MTF’s artistic policy to be reflective of South Africa today
- To present an innovative programme of new writing of the highest quality that speaks to and reflects contemporary society in all its diversity.
- To create a programme that provides a wide range of entry points for audiences, both local and international audiences
- To develop policies that maintain and grow the company’s reputation for commissioning/producing the best new theatre writers from the widest range of backgrounds; for discovering, nurturing and developing the next generation of creative talents.
- To actively engage in the MTF’s artistic output, directing plays if appropriate, and to develop and progress as an artist through the period of tenure.
- To cultivate and attract both established and emerging practitioners and actively seek out new talent working in tandem, where appropriate.
- Oversee the producing of all work.
- To seek collaborative partnerships with other theatres, arts or creative organizations with whom the MTF might expand its artistic ambitions and share its resources both nationally and internationally (including touring initiatives).
- To report to the CEO and Council on all artistic matters defining and monitoring the artistic objectives of the company.
- Conceptualization and development of overall MTF’s strategic programming.
- Development of all performance programs within the company, including educational programs
- Represent MTF at industry engagements
People management
- Prepare artistic reports for Council meetings and attend all management Council meetings.
- Prepare artistic report for the Foundationy’s annual report.
- Undertaking such duties as may reasonably be required within the remit of the portfolio.
Financial Management
- Develop, implement, maintain and administrate income generation and expenditure management plan.
- Budget preparation and reporting.
- Provide cash flow projections for the programmes for the year.
- Prepare departmental budget in line with the strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Manage and monitor financial risks.
People Management
- Delegate and empower staff to increase contribution and level of responsibility.
- Implement the performance management system within own area of operation.
- Recognise individuals and teams and provide developmental feedback in accordance with performance management principles.
- Effectively deal with staff discipline.
- Supervise staff (fair, firm and assertive)
- Handle staff disputes fairly and honestly by following labour law principles and MTF’s policies.
- Identify competencies required and suitable resources for specific tasks;
- Ensure training and development of staff within your own division.
- Monitor team members and measure effectiveness and performance.
- Manage own time as well as time of colleagues and other stakeholders; Manage conflict through a participatory transparent approach.
- Empower team members through recognising strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating tasks
Education & Training
- Ensure that the education, Community Theatre and other development programmes reflect the overall vision and identity of the MTF.
- Provide opportunities for the development of new writing.
- Liaise and partner with appropriate performing arts training institutions.
- Develop a plan to facilitate employment equity and skills transfer within own are of operation.

Minimum:
Tertiary qualification in an Arts related field
Minimum:
- 8 years industry experience, of which at least 3 years be at senior management level
- Strong curating & performing arts management experience
- Collaborative, ability to communicate abstract ideas in a clear and concise manner.
- Efficiency, attention to detail, and multitasking
Decision-making
Ideal:
- Master’s degree in the Arts and/or related field.
Ideal:
- 10 + Experience leading theatrical production teams;
- Experience engaging in financial development activities
- Strong record of progressive performing arts experience and achievement.
- Demonstrated experience developing new performing artsl works;
Strong dedication to, along with networks and experience partnering with communities that are traditionally under-resourced and underrepresented.
