Dr Siphe Potelwa

Council Member

Dr. Siphe Potelwa is a committed advocate for community participation, public awareness, dialogue, academic excellence, and youth development, with extensive experience spanning arts and heritage, higher education, and corporate governance. His work reflects a deep belief in culture as a vehicle for social meaning and transformation, a perspective shaped by both local leadership and international exposure. This was notably recognised when he received the Dongfang Scholarship from the government of the People’s Republic of China via Peking University, honouring his contributions to governance, economics, social development, culture, and heritage.

His ability to lead across complex institutional environments was further demonstrated when he represented African nations at the Second International Police Fingerprint and Face Symposium in France, where he engaged at the level of council and committee leadership.

Academically, Dr. Potelwa holds a PhD in Arts Education and currently serves as a senior lecturer. He previously directed the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre and headed the Fine Art/Visual Art Department at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice Campus within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. His academic foundation includes a Master’s degree in Visual Arts, a BTech degree in Fine Arts, and higher certificates in Strategic Planning, Human Resources in Skill Development, and Policing. Alongside his academic career, he has played a significant governance role across major cultural, educational, and heritage institutions.

His current appointments include serving as a council member of The Market Theatre Foundation, where he chairs the Building and Property Management portfolio as a ministerial appointee; membership of the Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council with responsibilities in strategy and fundraising as an MEC appointee; chairpersonship of the Institutional Forum at the University of Fort Hare; membership of the Lovedale TVET College Council as chair of Infrastructure and ICT; and the presidency of the South African Association of PhDs.

His past roles include serving as a visual arts advisory panellist for the National Arts Council and chairing both the council and key committees of the Nelson Mandela Museum.
