New Work – Voices of Women – Remembers Victims of GBVF

Mandisi “Dr. Disi” Sindo’s newly conceptualised work, Voices of Women (VOW), aims to reframe the memory, awaken the spirit and honour the voices of women who lost their lives at the hands of men. Landing at the Kippies Fringe for four strongly recommended performances running from 27 – 30 August 2026, this powerful theatre work features Liso The Musician and Lonalinamandla Bawuti.

This workshop-developed, devised and evolving piece of theatre is directed by Mandisi Sindo, an award-winning South African Shack Theatres innovator, director and artivist.

The work brings to life the stories of two women, Lungiswa and Simamkele, from different backgrounds, united in their fight against abuse. Through their stories, VOW sheds light on the harsh realities of domestic violence, sharing the painful journeys of women who have suffered at the hands of loved ones. The play draws inspiration from heartbreaking true events, including the tragic cases of Nosicelo Mtebeni and Noluvuyo Ndema-Nonkwelo, whose lives were brutally cut short in the Eastern Cape.

According to director, Sindo, audiences can look forward to more than just a performance, calling it a prayer, protest and promise that their stories will be told, their names will be remembered and the silence will be broken. “VOW calls us to reflect, to mourn and to act. Because every woman matters, and every voice deserves to be heard.”

The work further adds a layered and bold voice to the fight against South Africa’s epidemic of violence against women, standing as a powerful testament to the truth and a theatrical call-to-action for justice. “It’s a tribute to the countless women who have lost their lives to GBV—from Zukiswa Mhlakaza to Reeva Steenkamp, and many more. It’s a rallying cry for change, a testament to the strength and resilience of women who refuse to be silenced,” Sindo concludes.

Join us at the Kippies Fringe as we amplify the voices of the marginalised and demand justice for all. Performances from 27 – 30 August are scheduled as follows: Thursday and Friday (19:30); Saturday (15:30 & 19:30); Sunday (15:30).
