The Champion, a play by late Khayalethu Anthony’s acclaimed play returns in a powerful new reimagining directed by Naledi Award-winning theatre-maker Té Cresswell at The Market Theatre Kippies Fringe.
It will run from 1 – 4 October 2026 at Kippies.
This dynamic four-hander brings together four actors in a physically charged, humorous and deeply moving exploration of manhood, fatherlessness and alcoholism that resides in South African townships. Set both inside and outside the ring, ‘The Champion’ asks what it means to fight not only for victory, but for identity, belonging and healing.
Blending athletic movement with sharp storytelling and moments of unexpected humour, the production packs an emotional punch while examining the complex relationships that shape boys into men. Through sweat, wit and vulnerability the four characters unpack the life of their missing 5th gym buddy. As they grapple with absence, expectation and the search for role models in a world that often demands strength above all else.
Director Té Cresswell’s fresh interpretation breathes new life into Anthony’s compelling text, creating an intimate theatrical experience that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.
