The Fridge Returns in a Fringe

The Art Cave in association with The Market Theatre proudly presents Who Left the Fridge Open? as part of the Kippies Fringe. The play will run from 18 – 22 November 2026 at the intimate Kippies venue in Newtown, Johannesburg. Audiences can expect an intimate version of the comedy that places performance and storytelling at its centre.

At its heart, Who Left the Fridge Open? is a comedy rooted in everyday South African life, exploring the chaos, humour and tension that comes from shared domestic spaces, family dynamics and small misunderstandings that spiral out of control. The production leans into simplicity and immediacy, allowing audiences to connect directly with the performers and recognise their own lives reflected on stage. In a society where people constantly navigate pressure, cost-of-living stress and shifting family structures, the work offers a release through laughter and recognition.

“The aim with this version was to return to the essence of the story,” says award-winning writer and director Botshelo Mmutle. “We wanted to remove anything unnecessary and trust the audience to meet us in the humour, the silence and the truth of the characters. It’s about finding comedy in the things we all go through but rarely stop to question.”

Botshelo Mmutle is an award-winning writer and director whose work focuses on accessible, socially aware storytelling grounded in South African lived experience. His practice centres on creating theatre that speaks directly to audiences through humour, honesty and strong narrative clarity, with a growing body of work across stage and performance development spaces.

For a night of sharp comedy, relatable characters and honest storytelling, Who Left the Fridge Open? runs at Kippies Fringe, Market Theatre, Newtown from 18 – 22 November 2026.
