GET RICH OR DIE DRY

About

The TenderCats are planning their annual “business trip” to Budai, this trip entails that a group of girls between the ages of 16 to 22 under the weight of 80kgs are taken to Budai for a once in a lifetime opportunity. The TenderCats consist of Lwazi Mali: a flashy forex trader, Pastor Goodwill Patrick TosoOmo: a so-called servant of God with a huge following, lastly Bhekisile Sele: a sharp, foul mouthed Minister of Police. What these three have in common is greed and their love for money and they’ll stop at nothing to obtain it.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Seating benches and cushions

To sully means to damage the purity or integrity of…..In Sullied, the seminal work from director Matjamela Motloung and choreographer Kristi-Leigh Gresse (Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Dance 2021), movement and text give voice to what scholar Pumla Dineo Gqola calls South Africa’s “Female Fear Factory”: Rape. While the production comes to the Market Theatre during South Africa’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence; the work engages various paradigms of movement, thought, emotion, and spirituality to confront sexual violence.

Andiswa Gebashe, lands her sign-language performance skill in a first for South African theatre as no production before this has had a sign language performer not interpreting but being part of the cast, making this production accessible to a variety of patrons including the Deaf.

Violence to the female body at the hands of varied powerful social institutions forms part of the narrative ethos of Sullied, a daring work that utilizes dance, silence, spoken word and sign language to tell a story about the structures that inform the daily strife South African women face.

Sullied explores the themes of religion, body politics, racism, gender, sexuality, rape culture, and toxic masculinity in a politically charged country led by powerful male politicians. The purveyors of patriarchy are very present and succinct on some occasions and omnipresent on others.

Rich in complex themes and how they feed into each other with roots in our daily lives, Sullied examines the psychological effects of patriarchal ideologies and misogyny. How our interactions with one another are a result of these ideologies. The piece focuses heavily on the concept of cleansing. Rather than washing away tangible dirt, it confronts the idea of washing away the dirt trapped away in our subconscious because of fear, emotional trauma, and ingrained social norms around women’s identity.

This production questions the structure of patriarchy and its systems used to justify its control and manipulation of women and their bodies.

“The production interrogates the effects that patriarchal ideologies and misogyny has on the human psyche,” says Motloung.

“Specifically, the way these ideologies affect how we as human beings interact with one another.”

The show is sign language accessible with the generous support from Pansalb

MoMo Matsunyane appointed the Zwakala Festival Director!

MoMo Matsunyane appointed the Zwakala Festival Director!

The Market Theatre Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of MoMo Matsunyane as the new Festival Director of the Zwakala Festival that will take place from the 4th February 2023.

The Zwakala Festival is the most established and well-respected theatre festival in Gauteng. The revamped model of the festival has a much clearer mission and vision of the festival which is to develop, nurture and promote new writing talent, a platform for connecting communities and to support new writers/directors to connect with larger audiences.

MoMo has been a professional actor since 2004. She obtained an Honours Degree in Dramatic Arts from Wits University in 2012, majoring in Performance as well as Film and Television.

She has performed in numerous plays, films and television shows and has subsequently been nominated for and won several awards including: Best Actress in A Leading Role (Have You Seen Zandile? ;Naledi Theatre Awards 2014), Best Supporting Actress (Ankobia ;SA Theatre Magazine Awards 2017), Best Ensemble (Animal Farm; Naledi Theatre Awards 2015), Best Supporting Role (Tsotsi The Musical; Fleur Du Cap Awards 2018) amongst many others. In 2016/17 she co-directed multi-award Naledi winning play TAU which enjoyed a highly successful run at The Market Theatre.

MoMo started on the 1st of October 2022. “I hope to give an opportunity to plays and performers who will thrive and grow in an opportunity like this. It’s one thing to want to be on a stage like the Market Theatre’s but it’s another to be hungry for it. I also wish to have a variety of plays that represent a multitude of voices particularly those from communities’ people consider marginalised, forgotten or unworthy” said the newly appointed resident director, MoMo Matsunyane.

The Zwakala Festival continues to remain one of South Africa’s most dynamic theatre festivals aimed specifically at community-based theatre-makers. Established three years after the Market Theatre Laboratory was founded in 1989 by Barney Simon and John Kani with funding from the Rockerfeller Foundation.

The Zwakala Festival is proudly sponsored by the Department of Sports Arts and Culture incubation programme.

Amapiano & African Groove @ the Market Theatre This December

Sun-El Musician, Makhafula Vilakazi, The Brother Moves On, Lady Du, Femi Koya, Muntu Vilakazi, Maria McCloy, Malome Vector, Wenawedwa, Ms Jones, DJ Stopper Bells, Lady Amar, DJ Roto, Ms Party and Sanelisiwe Yekani as MC.

“If music be the food of love, play on,” wrote dramatist, William Shakespeare in the play, Twelfth Night. It is the twelfth month of the year, and music is what the doctor ordered this December at the Market Theatre after a dramatic year on the stage. As a nation under a groove, December or Dezemba is a uniquely South African proposition and as an institution of artistic excellence, the Market Theatre has curated a musical spectacular that will usher the citizenry into the festive season from Friday 9 December to the 17th.

Live @ the Market will take part over two weekends featuring the talents of Sun El and Lady Du for the house and piano enthusiast and Makhafula Vilakazi, The Brother Moves On and Femi Koya for the discerning Pan African listener.

In this gathering, we want to invoke the spirit of love and relentless compassion, sacrifice and strength, care and tenderness. We will be reminded of how music-making has opened up our imaginations to what a truly just society might look like. We will be reminded of how moments of freedom do not only have to end on stage. We can carry them everywhere we go the in the same ways that the musicians in this line-up illustrate.

Let’s fine-tune those dance moves because ziyakhala manje kuguga othandayo! Get ready for a fantastic and entertaining weekend that will get you in the mood for the holidays!

The John Kani stage will feature live band performances for only R250 for a day pass, followed by DJ performances for only R100 at a cordoned-off area outside the theatre.

Over the years, the Market Theatre has hosted numerous music events, but this is our first time tapping into amapiano as part of our efforts to create an inclusive artistic space.

The Pan African weekend kicks off our lineup on Friday 9th, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of December 2022. African music has shaped much of our lives and continues to inform our understanding of ourselves as a people. Our music has not only been about entertainment but through it, we have been able to articulate or experience our desires. Musicians participating in this Pan-African experience include The Brother Moves On, Femi Koya, Makhafula Vilakazi, Malome Vector, Muntu Vilakazi, Ms Jones, Wenawedwa, and Maria McCloy.

Amapiano traces its roots to Kwaito, blending Zulu fork lore with South African sounds. Its rhythm and beats are clear and distinct. With continuous piano keys in the music, deep bass, jazz and percussions with melodic voices, the Market Theatre will host Sun- El Musician, Lady Du, DJ Stopper Bells, Lady Amar, DJ Roto, Ms Party, and Sanelisiwe Yekani as MC to close out the musical festivities.

Don’t miss a beat with this year’s Live @the Market music extravaganza!

ASKARI

The wait is finally over for Johannesburg audiences as ASKARI makes its debut at the Market Theatre for only 4 nights!

ASKARI a riveting and invigorating political thriller will transfer to the Market Theatre after another successful season at the South African State Theatre from Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 October 2022.

Sello Maseko has a knack for crafting tightly-paced action sequences while keeping the tension throughout the show. Telling stories about freedom fighters does not begin with ASKARI for Maseko. He is the writer and director of the play Angola Camp 13, which recounts the betrayal amongst struggle heroes when in exile.

The play received eleven Naledi Award nominations and won six which included  best production of musical, best director of musical and best choreography in 2020.

ASKARI is a story of freedom fighters and community activists who are turned to be deadly assassins, double agents, informers and intelligence analysts. It tells the story of men and women who infiltrated organized civic movements and student organisations for recruiting unsuspecting youth and influential leaders. This story interrogates the decisions that led to their choice of turning from community activists to mass killers. The story goes deep into the personal account of these individuals who administered pain, fear and death. These stories of betrayal, death, redemption, and forgiveness are captured through dazzling music, dance, and powerful storytelling.

This action packed production is based on real events, the action-packed political thriller relates the story of freedom fighters who were double agents, informers and intelligence analysts, and deadly assassins for the Vlakplaas counterinsurgency unit that specialised in executing and torturing anti-apartheid activists

The play seeks to honour the struggle heroes who died in the torture chambers of Vlakplaas and also reconcile the nation.

Presented by the SAST in association with Mantimakhulu PTY LTD and the Market Theatre, the production takes a musical play format with captivating choreography being accompanied by score from a six-piece band featuring Nhlapo and Cromwell Modungwa as Musical Directors. Original cast members including Abongile Matyutyu (as Thomas Maseko), Soyiso Ndaba (Boboza Khumalo), Monica Muller (Marita Swanepoel), and Kagiso Matlala (Thembi Madida) reprise their roles as Actor Wilf Mahne assumes the villain character of Gert Swanepoel.

The Drowning Eye

After sold out performances at National Arts Festival, Frantz Fanon's The Drowning Eye bring revolutionary love to Joburg

The South African debut of Frantz Fanon’s love play, The Drowning Eye comes to Joburg

Frantz Fanon’s play invites audiences to reignite their belief in the possibility of love

Frantz Fanon’s play explores the edge between love, shadow and violence

Revolutionary Love is a new artistic project that looks at love and revolution in all their intertwining. Its first artistic ventures, a production of Frantz Fanon’s play, ‘The Drowning Eye’, premiered to critical acclaim and full houses at this year’s National Arts Festival (NAF) in Makhanda and will now open at The Ramolao Makhene Theatre in Johannesburg on October 7, 2022.

Written in 1949, when the young Martiniquan author was just 24 and a student in Paris, ‘The Drowning Eye’ is part love poem, part surrealist narrative, part philosophical treatise, and a powerful testimony to the power and possibilities of love as an act of resistance.

This contemporary reimagining of the text, sets the play in the aftermath of revolution and entangles fiction and poetry with Fanon’s biography to explore the edge between love, shadow and violence. Tamara Guhrs and Stacy Hardy join forces with KwaSha Theatre Company, the Market Theatre Lab and Windybrow Arts Centre, with music by Tumi Mogorosi, to present this work at a time when Fanon’s writing has new relevance for a generation of young South Africans questioning the limits and possibilities of revolution today.

‘The Drowning Eye’ is performed in the midst of an exhibition which combines archival material with poetic lines of flight and philosophical questions, and features voice by Lesego Rampolokeng, as well as film and music to explore revolutionary love in all its guises – revolutionary manifestations of love, love as a revolutionary force and the historic role of love and lovers within liberation movements (from Frantz and Josie Fanon to Che Guevara and Aleida March Torre, Winnie and Nelson Mandela, Miriam Makeba and Stokely Carmichael, and many more.)

For audiences unfamiliar with Fanon’s work, the play and accompanying exhibition serve as a potent introduction to the life and work of one of the most important anti-colonial thinkers. For readers of Fanon it’s an opportunity to engage the complex interplay between poetry, psychology, philosophy, and political theory that came to define his oeuvre. For lovers it’s an invitation to reignite their passion at a time when love is too often caught between consumer culture, popularist narcissism and casual sexual encounters.

As Nkgopoleng Moloi wrote in her review of the production at NAF, “the play reads as a surrealist offering whose goal is to free language, thought and human experience from despotic boundaries of rationalism. Here is Fanon, endlessly (re)creating himself. “

Directed by Tamara Guhrs, The Drowning Eye features performances by the Market Theatre Foundation’s dynamic youth theatre company, KwaSha! This company has, in the last five years, become an important platform in Joburg’s cultural landscape, where up-and-coming performers receive a year-long contract, the opportunity to work with various directors and an artistic home at the Windybrow Arts Centre. This year’s iteration – “KwaSha the 5th” is made up of Moagi Kai, Mongezi Ntukwana, Mncedisi Hadebe, Nonhlanhla Sidiki and Sivuyise Kibido. With dramaturgy by Stacy Hardy and Kaushik Sunder Rajan, and design by Megan Miller, the production promises a visual, emotional and thought-provoking journey into what ‘love in all its forms’ can mean for us today.  It is made possible with the support of the National Arts Festival (NAF), French Institute South Africa (IFAS), Bolloré and Mazarz, with research facilitated by the Neubauer Collegium for Culture & Society, at the University of Chicago.
